Coffin Club Caledonia

Coffin Club Caledonia is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) dedicated to advancing public understanding of death, funerals and end-of-life planning. It exists to make conversations about death more open, informed and accessible - because when people understand their options, they are better able to make choices that reflect their values, wishes and circumstances.

Angela is proud to be involved with Coffin Club Caledonia alongside other trustees and facilitators across Scotland, supporting its mission to improve death literacy, reduce unnecessary stress, and help prevent funeral poverty through education and shared knowledge.

but it remains a difficult subject for us to talk about

Coffin Club Caledonia is part of the wider Coffin Club UK network, a grassroots movement that encourages people to talk openly about death and dying, and to learn about practical, sustainable and affordable funeral choices.

As a charity, Coffin Club Caledonia focuses on education rather than provision. It does not sell funeral services. Instead, it creates safe, welcoming spaces where people can ask questions, share experiences, and gain clear, trustworthy information about:

  • Funeral options and costs

  • Planning ahead and recording wishes

  • Sustainable and environmentally conscious choices

  • Equality, diversity and personal expression in an end-of-life ceremony

Many people reach the end of life - their own or someone else’s - without understanding the choices available to them. Low “death literacy” can lead to:

  • Increased stress at already difficult times

  • Higher funeral costs

  • Fewer personal or meaningful choices

  • Confusion about rights, options and processes

Coffin Club Caledonia exists to address this gap by normalising conversation and offering clear, practical education in an inclusive and compassionate way.

Why This Matters

The charity delivers free public workshops, talks, and community events across Scotland, often bringing together guest speakers from across the funeral and end-of-life sectors. These sessions are designed to be accessible, respectful and informative — with no pressure and no agenda.

Coffin Club Caledonia has a growing track record of community delivery, particularly in Dundee and Angus, with expanding reach into Fife and Perthshire. Its work is supported by small grants, careful financial management and a strong volunteer and trustee base.

What Coffin Club Caledonia Does

PHOTO-2025-06-20-15-11-25.jpg

Coffin Club Caledonia’s work supports:

  • Individuals and families planning ahead

  • People who are bereaved or caring for others

  • Older people and those living with long-term illness or disability

  • Communities affected by financial hardship

  • Anyone who wants to understand funeral choices before they are needed

By making information more accessible, the charity helps people feel more confident, informed and empowered when it matters most.
